Professor Cláudio Tadeu Daniel-Ribeiro (MD - 1976 and DSc - 1983) is the Head of the Malaria Research Laboratory at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz and of the Center for Malaria Research and Training at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), which is a Malaria Reference Center for the Extra-Amazonian Region at the Secretary of Health Surveillance (Ministry of Health). He is a Full Researcher at Fiocruz and at the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq); an Academician of the Academy of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro and of the National Academy of Medicine of France; the Vice-President (President Elect) of the International Federation for Tropical Medicine; the President of the Brazilian Society of Malariology (2008), and a Member of the Scientific Council of the Impact Malaria Initiative (France). Additionally, he acts as a consultant for several Brazilian Scientific Agencies (such as CNPq, Capes, Finep, Faperj and others) and is a member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Journals (among them: Acta Tropica, Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Médécine Tropicale, Parasite, The Open Parasitology and The Open Autoimmunity Journals).

He is a former Professor (1997-1998) of the Medicine University of the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), where he has also obtained (1983) his Doctorat d’État degree on Human Biology (Immunology). He is a former Director of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz. In 1997, he received the Sendas Prize, an award on Health for his contributions to the research and the education on malariology in Brazil. He holds a longstanding interest in the immunology and the immunopathology of malaria, with a particular focus on natural human and experimental simian Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax malaria, as well as on the murine model of infection, protective immunity, vaccine development and testing and immunopathology, with emphasis on autoimmunity and cerebral malaria. He has published over one-hundred scientific articles and has supervised 31 MSc and PhD thesis and monographs on different topics of immunology and malariology.
